When you're involved in a car accident, there is one service you are all but guaranteed to require-automotive repair. There are numerous aspects which you need to be aware of to ensure your protection.
Any car repair work completed following an accident and paid for by an insurance company is meant to restore your vehicle to its original condition before the accident.
One good piece of advice is to take your own photos of your vehicle. This will allow you to compare the finished work to the original condition of your car. You should also keep accurate records of all service and repairs performed on your vehicle as well as a list of nay new parts which were installed to verify the condition of your car at the time of the accident.

Check with your insurance agent to verify what options your insurance policy has. Many policies will cover the cost of towing and/or storing your damaged vehicle as well as provide you with a loaner vehicle while the repairs are being made to your car. The repair process can take several weeks when the insurance company is paying so it may be a good idea to invest in rental coverage.

Most insurance companies require a minimum of two written repair estimates for review. If you notice a significant difference in the costs of the two estimates, it is advisable to get a third estimate. You should also check with your insurance company for a list of recommended auto body repair shops. Some insurance companies may even require you to use one of their approved repair professionals. When the insurance company requires use of an approved shop, the insurance company must pay for the entire estimate less any deductibles you have. They are not permitted to pass any other costs on to you.
Your written estimate will be done by either the auto body shop itself or an insurance adjuster. Be sure to examine the estimate closely to see what work is included. As with any major deal or transaction in life, you want to monitor the process to ensure you are receiving proper treatment and are offered all options. For example, you need to ensure that any damages parts are being replaced with new replacement parts. If you have an older vehicle, your insurance policy may state that new parts cannot be used. You should read through your insurance policy carefully because many insurance companies employ this technique in an effort to save money.
When in doubt, don't hesitate to ask questions. Either your insurance company or the repair shop should be able to provide you with specific details as to which parts are going to be used on your vehicle. If this is not specified on the written estimate, ask for it to be rewritten. If you have an older vehicle, or even if it is newer, you should always do your own research to see if new replacement parts are readily accessible for your vehicle. If they are, you have the right to request that new parts be used. Also check to ensure that any parts being used on your vehicle are made specifically for your make and model and are not a generic version designed to fit many models.
Once the estimate has been finalized and you are satisfied with the work to be done, you need to ensure that any settlement you are to receive will cover the costs of repair. Additionally, once the repairs are done, keep records of the warranty on the work performed as well as on any of the parts. And keep in mind, you generally have up to 30 days to report any damaged caused in the accident that wasn't repaired or costs which weren't covered in your settlement.
